Using crystals and stones as scrying tools, can be traced back the 5th century. And while these divination tools were banned during the Middle Ages, they remained popular.

One notable fan of using crystal balls as scrying tools was our favorite Elizabethan era astrologer, mathematician, and alchemist, John Dee.

Crystal balls, along with planchettes, were also popular during the Victorian era, and saw an explosion in popularity during the Spiritualist movement of the United States.
